Safe-Moor
Unlike conventional chain moorings, Safe-Moor™ reduces habitat destruction and scouring, encouraging the restoration of endangered seagrass and coral reefs. Safe-Moor provides a strong and secure mooring solution for your vessel.
The Importance of seagrass and the benthic floor:
Seagrass is essential to the marine habitat and environment as it provides areas for marine species to spawn and forage while protecting the bottom and shoreline from erosion. Despite all of its benefits, seagrass is disappearing at a rate of 110 km2 per year since 1980, with the loss accelerating in recent years.
Despite occupying just 0.2% of the seafloor, seagrass accounts for 10% of the ocean's capacity to store carbon. Seagrass plays an essential role in mitigating the effects of climate change such as rising global temperatures and ocean acidification.
The Solution
Safe-Moor utilizes patented stretch-hose technology (commercialized by Shorebreak Tech’s partner, EOM Offshore) to preserve the marine habitat and keep boats and docks safe. Safe-Moor also provides a tighter watch circle (the diameter/circle a traditional mooring can travel due to wind and currents) providing a more efficient mooring layout for marina environments. Safe-Moor's modular design can also be deployed in higher mooring-load settings or increased water depths.

The Problem

The Solution
Safe-Moor™ is ideal for:
-
Single Vessel Moorings
-
Seasonal Docks
-
Oceanographic Mooring Compliance Elements
-
Maritime Protection Barriers
-
Navigation buoys
-
Category 1 hurricane-resistant (74-95 mph winds)
-
Composition: mooring tether comprised of stretch controlling nylon and vulcanized rubber, aramid strength members in center core
-
All Safe-Moor terminations utilize 316 stainless steel for enhanced durability
-
Stretch action significantly reduces bio-fouling
-
Optional high visibility buoyancy terminations

Safe-Moor is designed to reduce snap/shock loads by providing immediate compliance when under sudden tension (higher waves, wind gusts). The benefit: there is less potential for damage to cleats in high wave activity settings.
“Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (MA DMF) recommends replacing conventional chain moorings with conservation moorings in eelgrass (Zostera marina) and other sensitive habitats to protect valuable natural resources.” - Tay Evans, Marine Fisheries Biologist, The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries: Conservation Boat Mooring Recommendations in Eelgrass and Other Sensitive Aquatic Habitats June 10, 2019
"Shorebreak Take": Unlike Safe-Moor, conventional chain moorings scour the seafloor damaging sensitive habitats and have a large "watch circle," or drift area on the surface, endangering the moored boat, dock, or buoy, as well as the infrastructure around it. Safe-Moor is also resistant to biofouling as it stretches while working. If we are serious about protecting seagrass and sensitive subsurface habitats, then Safe-Moor is part of the solution.
